The Imperial War Museum is recruiting for an education and outreach officer to work alongside the Education Manager to develop a brand new education and outreach programme for this brand new national museum!

Department: Imperial War Museum-North	

Location: Trafford, Greater Manchester

Responsible to: Education Manager, Imperial War Museum-North

Responsible for : There is no line management responsibility

Salary range: £17 000-£20 750 

Contract: Fixed-term three year contract


MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The post holder will be part of the small Exhibitions and Learning team developing this new, national Museum in Trafford, Greater Manchester.  You will be responsible to the Education Manager, sharing with her the day-to-day running of the education service, devising and delivering the programme to schools, families, adult and informal audiences within the Museum and through outreach projects. You will be a member of the Exhibitions and Learning team, which will work together to build new audiences and to develop projects and exhibitions to encourage active participation in the life of the Museum from visitors and volunteers.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ROLE

To contribute to the development, delivery and teaching of the programme for schools, family, formal and informal education groups, in conjunction with the Education Manager.


· To work with community groups and other organisations to build new audiences for the learning programme of Imperial War Museum-North.


· To develop a programme of outreach activities, in conjunction with the Education Manager, to build and sustain new audiences for the Museum.

· To organise and run special events, for example, conferences for sixth formers, adult and student audiences. This will involve the post-holder in the coordination of freelance educators, volunteers, and in working directly with people and groups.

· To contribute to the exhibitions programme and to work in partnership with the Exhibitions and Learning team to develop a programme that is committed to the principles and practice of social inclusion, and of active participation in the life of the Museum.

· To assist the Education Manager in the coordination of the volunteer scheme, and to contribute to the development and delivery of training for volunteer interpreters, who will lead gallery-based activities to a wide range of people.

· To contribute to the development, research, writing, testing and evaluation of resources to the different audiences of the learning programme, including web-based resources.

· To assist in the promotion and marketing of the learning and outreach programme, in conjunction with the Education and Marketing Managers.

· To contribute to the efficient administration of the learning service, including responding to general enquiries, bookings and requests for information, as required.

· To contribute to and participate in internal working groups of the Museum, and to attend external conferences, training and seminars as appropriate.

· To actively participate in and contribute to the Sharing Good Practice sessions for the education team of the whole Imperial War Museum (Cabinet War Rooms, Duxford, HMS Belfast, Imperial War Museum and IWM-North).


Person Specification

Academic

Essential       Degree in a subject relevant to the Imperial War Museum and its collections
A proven interest in and knowledge of twentieth century history
A teaching qualification and/or demonstrable experience of working with different audiences in a learning environment

Experience and Knowledge

Essential       Experience of working with a variety of groups, local communities and local organisations in a learning environment
Sound knowledge and understanding of the national curriculum
A broad general knowledge that enables a cross-curricular approach to the learning programme

Desirable       Good administrative skills and experience
Experience of creating and/or running outreach projects


Personal Skills

Essential       A commitment to and understanding of social inclusion and access in museums
Creative and professional approach to teaching
Ability to work creatively with limited resources
Ability to work well as part of a team, but also with initiative within the wider goals of the project
Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
Good computer skills

Desirable       Ability to manage and motivate volunteers
Good working knowledge of another language other than English
Full, clean driving licence

Personal Qualities

Essential       Friendly and confident manner with people, and a sense of humour
Ability to work well with a wide range of people and groups
 
Special Requirements

· A flexible approach to duties and hours of work is essential in this early stage of the Museum's development. Evenings and weekend work can be expected, for which leave-in-lieu can be claimed.
· A willingness to travel within the region, and to the other IWM sites in the south east region.

Conditions of Service

· The standard week is normally 41 hours over a five-day week, inclusive of a one hour lunch break each day.  
· The annual leave allowance is 22 days per annum plus 9 days public holidays, rising to 25 after one year's service.
· The successful candidate will be on probation for one year.
· The Museum has a total ban on smoking in all its buildings.

Bands

All posts in the Museum are allocated to a Band to indicate approximately the level of responsibility of the post and position in the Museum's structure. As an Audience Development Officer, your Band Allocation will be Band C. Please note that this band allocation is subject to review.
