An opportunity to learn about partnership working in practice. Speakers from
museums around the region will discuss a range of partnership projects

? regional, national and international ? and share their practical experiences of making partnerships, obtaining funding, and developing and delivering projects. PROGRAMME 10.30 am Arrival and coffee 11.00 am A partnership solution to large object storage           Work is about to start on the construction of one of the largest new           buildings ever erected for museum purposes in the north east ? the           joint Beamish/ Tyne & Wear Museums Large Object Collections Centre           (LOCC). The Centre will play a vital role in saving internationally           important industrial, maritime, railway, mining, transport and           agricultural collections from decay and in improving public access to           this material.           John Gall of Beamish and John Clayson of TWM will explain the need for           such a facility in the region, the origins of the partnership between           their organisations, how the scheme was developed in consultation with           NEMS, and how it came to be funded jointly by the MGC/Resource           Designation Challenge Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund. 11.30 am Artworld: creating collaborative teaching resources in university           museums           Karen Exell of the University of Durham's Oriental Museum will talk           about this exciting new project, which is just getting underway. A           collaboration between the Universities of Durham and East Anglia and           the V & A, this 3 year project is funded by the Joint Information           Systems Committee (JISC). It aims to develop teaching resources for           use on CD ROM or online from an image database. Karen will provide an           insight into the project, partners and funding, plus the Higher           Education context and the technology which makes the project possible. 12.00 noon A national railway collection in the north east           A £6.1 m HLF funded project is being developed to bring the National           Railway Museum's reserve vehicle collection to the north. This           partnership between Sedgefield Borough Council and the NRM will see           vehicles being relocated from stores all over the country to a new           facility at the Timothy Hackworth Museum at Shildon - with benefits of           improved access and interpretation. Alan Pearce of the Timothy           Hackworth Museum and a speaker from the NRM (to be confirmed) will           talk about the development of the partnership, the current status of           the project and the expectations for the future. 12.30 pm Lunch (lunch not provided, café on site or do your own thing) 1.30 pm Tomorrow's History           Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and managed by NEMLAC, a           partnership of libraries, museums and archives in the North East           region are involved in the Tomorrow's History project to open up           twenty-first century access to their collections and to support           community history projects across the region. As part of the           northeast.com, the region's official website and on-line Regional           Information Service, Tomorrow's History will be delivered through           networks to schools, colleges and libraries throughout the region, and           nationally and globally over the World Wide Web.           Eileen Carnaffin, Tomorrow's History Project Officer, and Iain Watson           from Durham County Council's Arts, Libraries and Museums Department           will provide an overview of the project and discuss some of the issues           relating to working with a large number of partners. 2.00 pm European partnerships on museum projects           Tyne & Wear Museums has participated in a couple of European           partnerships and, as the City of Culture 2008 bid is prepared by           Newcastle and Gateshead, the pressure is on to get involved in more.           TWM have a rich vein of experience from the first 2 projects, a           virtual Euro-museum on CD and an exhibition organised between 5           countries, but does that mean that it is possible to see in advance           whether new projects are worthwhile?           John Millard of Tyne & Wear Museums will talk about these projects and           the value of international collaboration. 3.00 pm Discussion 3.30 pm Tea and close              The seminar will be in the Daniels Room at Segedunum.                  This seminar is free to Museums North members.          Non-members can also come along for the modest fee of £7.00 ?              inclusive of one year's free Museums North membership.      Cheques should be made payable to the Northern Federation of Museums. Name: I will/will not be attending the meeting at Segedunum on 27 April 2001. I am/am not a member of Museums North and enclose a fee of £7.00.
