Dear David,
Hello, remember me?
The guidelines we use when running our branch of The Young Archaeologists
Club which runs for a 2 hour period is that we do not accept unaccompanied
children under nine. We do let younger siblings stay if a parent or carer
stays too. (I believe the law says 8 in Scotland). My understanding of it is
that for longer than a two hour period different rules apply under The
Childrens' Act. Of course we have all been police checked as well. We would
not give an unchecked person unsupervised responsibility for unaccompanied
children.
These guidelines have usually proved reasonably workable if more flexibly in
our museum activity workshops as well as sessions are unlikely to last more
than 2 hours. For an activity based workshop, i.e. involving making
something, we generally find that one person cannot sensibly cope with more
than 30 and depending on the activity that is sometimes pushing it!
(Stress-wise and quality of attention wise)
Hope this helps
