hmm just to throw my penny worth in on this

i agree with paul that there is some issues here that i wonder if FISH can
take at least help, make some broad suggestions on or start the debate in
wider (especially with its national remit).

Increasingly we are looking at resources rather than just recording
systems. With CAD, GIS, digital images all being integrated into our
systems. Indeed we there has been many lectures and presentations
from ADS and the like. It seems to me that there is a number of problems
that are waiting in the wings that we may need to at least think about.

Especially in terms of .....

content standards for the numerous CAD and GIS layers (one good
example is the Historic landscape Characterisation projects that are
going on throughout the country .... all of which do not seem no base
standards so are likely to be impossible to bring together in any
meaningful way to the public or to non specialist)

Within archaeology we have embraced CAD and other such systems but
all this digitial archive we are generating does not have any base line
content standards.

I am not suggesting that we try a one size fits all... but maybe at least
some base line standards or principles may help with interopability of
information.

In many ways it is early days with the use of digital resources (photos,
GIS, CAD etc)... I wonder if it would be prudent to think about some of
these issues while the problem is relatively small.

Yes I acept that GIS is one of the main technical challenges /
developments
facing managers of heritage and historic environment data. The issue for
FISH (as I see it) is to what can the heritage sector can influence
standards and initiatives that are driven by developments beyond our
sector.
Do you have any particular issues in mind that FISH has the remit and
influence to address?
