Jason Sidall presented a review of work undertaken by the NTSMR at
Cirencester on Monument Status recording as an example of the problems in
producing interoperable data even where organisations use the same database
system (e.g. the exeGesIS system used by the National Trust and many local
SMRs).
Discussion identified the need to look at the practicalities of producing
interoperable data through various approaches:
· enforcement (only viable where standards are tied into funding
arrangements);
· highlighting the advantages with exemplary projects;
· education in indexing procedures and available standards;
· developing a sense of participation in standards development (removing
barriers to participation such as exclusive jargon rich language);
· working to remove technological barriers by improving the specification of
database systems so that they incorporate standards.
It was AGREED that FISH should seek to develop all these approaches.
