David Thomas has recently taken up his post with the Royal Commission on the
Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales. His is the sole post devoted to
data standards issues within the organisation. The RCAHMW has made
significant advances in putting data on the web via CARN
(http://www.rcahmw.org.uk/data/carn.html) and also GIS data, but work is
needed on underlying standards. Priorities include data auditing;
development of end-to-end data standards from primary data capture in the
field through to dissemination; enforcement issues. The Commission also
plays a co-ordinating role in the END (Extended National Database)
partnership of heritage bodies in Wales, including promulgating standards.
An additional issue specific to Wales is the Welsh language, and the
Commission is exploring ways of making information available in both Welsh
and English.
