Hello,
Suppose you want to jump around within a stream access file.
One can use inquire() to determine whether a particular byte
is a valid location in the stream access file, or whether it's
one of the OS-specific record control locations. One should
only read or write to or from the locations inquire says are
valid data locations.
So, for example, bytes 1 through 80 may be valid, 81 and 82 not,
83 through 163 valid and so on.
As others have posted, achar( 10), pad=, / edit descriptor, et al.
are a high level toolkit for manipulating one's location.
