Typically, the .mod file contains information that the compiler requires
about the contents of a module when compiling another program unit that USEs
that module. Thus
f90 -c mymodule.f90
f90 myprogram.f90 mymodule.obj
is a sequence where the .mod file would be produced and used 'behind the
scenes' without the user needing to know of its existence. Note that the
.obj file here contains the object code of the module procedures in the
module (assuming some exist).
