One of our renal physicians attended the annual American Nephrology meeting
this year at which he heard a talk about the importance of assessing urine
supersaturation in potential renal stone formers. He says that computer
programs such as EQUIL2 are available as freeware, can calculate saturation
from measured concentrations of the usual urine renal stone parameters. A
paper in J Urology 134:1242,1985 by Werness et al describes how this is
calculated. It looks complicated and more suited to specialist centres that
have large numbers of patients.
Does anyone have any experience of using this program or simpler ones and
know whether they are available?
Does anyone still look at crystal microscopy of urine deposits maintained at
37 degrees, which would appear to be a simple and practical alternative?
Many thanks
