I'm based at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester and we're looking at developing an Art and Design Study Centre for access to behind the scenes collections. We currently have Print, Textiles and Wallpaper Study rooms but they are fairly small and quite limited in terms of their use (mostly specialists, academics and research-based). We are interested in developing the use of "study rooms" - to allow for "study" in the widest sense - to create spaces accessible to family groups, schools, community groups, drop-in members of the public... Can anyone think of examples of layered/innovative interpretation of behind the scenes collections or study/learning/discovery centres that work well with a range of audiences... either in the UK or abroad? We're still at the planning stages so are looking for lots of ideas - they don't have to be art and design based at all.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
