Schlumberger Excellence in Educational Development
Internet: access and content
==============================
"Interdependence, new technologies and access to information are key
issues in the new millennium. Schlumberger has the resources to provide
sustainable responses to the young, particularly in developing countries.
We've called our response, SEED, Schlumberger Excellence in Educational
Development." - Simone Crook, President of the SEED Foundation
SEED, a Schlumberger volunteer based initiative, was created in 1998, and
today operates in 16 countries and to date has provided 75,000 students
with access to new technologies and the Internet. SEED provides both rich
educational content through its science and technology web site and grants
to finance the purchase of Internet access. The SEED Foundation is building
an active community around educational interests and knowledge sharing.
It relies on the commitment of Schlumberger's multicultural employees
and the know-how of the company operating in over 100 countries.
1998-2000, the initial results
==============================
In two years, the SEED Foundation has provided 75,000 students in 40 schools
with access to the Internet, at an average cost of $17 per student. The SEED
program is now established in 16 of the 100 countries where Schlumberger is
present: Argentina, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Malaysia,
Mexico, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Russia, South Africa, Thailand, Venezuela
and Vietnam.
The educational web site has published 90 articles , as well as science
experiments, projects and profiles of Schlumberger experts, more than 50
of whom have answered hundreds of questions on-line. The site is recommended
on the web sites of peer institutions, such as the BBC, UNICEF, NASA, NSTA,
Exploratorium and many others.
A total of 400 volunteers have contributed so far to the development of
SEED.
The SEED Foundation draws on the intrinsic strengths and competencies of the
Schlumberger group: people, science & technology, diversity and global
presence.
