I agree that there always appears to be apathy when replacing officers of
organisations like NAMHO. CSCC (Council of Southern Caving Clubs) was just
as bad when I was Treasurer of that and my local Caving Club is even worse!
I became NAMHO Treasurer several years ago as no-one else would volunteer at
that NAMHO AGM - I was attending to speak on behalf of Hades Caving Club
joining NAMHO. Just to show further apathy most (but definitely by no means
all) groups who want to join NAMHO nowadays do not bother to attend the
meeting where their application is being considered - this used to be
considered almost essential to get into NAMHO years ago! By the way don't be
confused that NAMHO meetings other than the AGM are called 'Council
meetings'. The NAMHO Council consists of the representatives from all NAMHO
member organisations and are not in any way restricted in who can attend.
[Strictly unless you are your group's NAMHO rep you should have his/her
authority to attend and vote, but NAMHO meetings never restrict anyone's
right to speak].
Please encourage your club members to seriously consider getting more
involved in NAMHO; I paid out over £100 in travelling expenses to those that
attended the last meeting. The next NAMHO meeting is the AGM on Saturday 9
March 2002 at Dolaucothi Gold Mine; the mileage rate is 12p per mile, but is
only paid for ONE person from each group attending.
I can not understand why Mike Moore is suggesting a separate Mining History
section of the BCRA or joining in the BCRA/NCA merger talks unless of course
he wants to become another caving politician! I think it works well at the
moment with NAMHO as a member of the NCA; more interest of mining history
within BCRA would be good, but would need to come from BCRA members. I am
sure NAMHO would continue membership of the new BNCRA or whatever it may
become (I'm not holding my breath though as this debate shows no signs of
coming to an end and has already gone for many years).
I do hope that we get several more replies to this thread. Prospective
NAMHO Secretary people, please line up. It looks like Mike is psyching
himself up to consider nomination for Chairman . . . .
Hope I haven't stirred up too many hornets!
Roger Gosling
NAMHO Treasurer
PS NAMHO subs are due on 1 January; reminders will be going in the post
soon.
I said in the last NAMHO Treasurer's report (to the 2001 AGM) that I wanted
this to be my last year as Treasurer. I must have been a bit fed up that day
as I am quite happy to carry on. However if someone else would like to
volunteer. . . .
