Hello list
I have been a member of this list for several years now and am very grateful
for the friends and contacts made and especially for the information gleaned
in various discussions.
The current thread about 'NAMHO' - I find as confusing as the organisation
itself. I do not intend to be critical as I am sure the organisation does
great work through it's member groups however, I personally would be happy
to belong to a group which devotes itself to the study of the industry. All
of the constituent groups which are members seem (to me) to be a little far
removed from the general subject of mining history having specific
geographical or subject leanings (lead, tin, caving etc.) and people like
myself (I think) would welcome the ability to join a group which has a
broader scope. Living as I do in Suffolk (not the most prolific mining area
of the UK!) I do not have the ability to attend meetings all over the north
of England so sit in hope that the right 'club' may yet come to my
attention.
What do others think? Surely in this age of internet and e-mail there ought
to be some way of joining (by subscription if needs be) a group which would
then give the member greater involvement in NAMHO. Perhaps then the much
talked about 'apathy' would vanish??
I am sure now that someone will leap to the keyboard and advise me of such
groups that exist? All I can say in my defence is that, to date, I have not
found them so perhaps a membership drive or publicity campaign may be in
order?
Regards to the mining community
