Conference - Creative links to literacy: the role of the arts and
libraries
London, Friday 30 November 2001
Fee £150
The National Literacy Trust's annual conference this year will be on
Creative links to literacy: the role of the arts and libraries. The
conference will aim to persuade education providers of the benefits of
using the arts and libraries to help raise literacy standards for
hard-to-reach groups of all age ranges, from school pupils to young
people, to adults in basic skills education.
It will attempt to:
- encourage everyone to see how the arts and libraries are part of a
holistic approach to raising literacy standards
- move the debate forward for those already involved in the arts and
persuade those not involved to see the impact this sector may make
through the development of effective partnerships
- facilitate the creation of partnerships by bringing together a broad
range of delegates
- persuade those with control of resources that it is worth investing in
complementary approaches to getting people involved in learning
- encourage belief in a long-term approach as the only way to achieve
lasting results
- examine funding opportunities.
The target audience is education, arts and libraries policy makers and
practitioners, including local government, regional arts boards,
education action zones, regional development agencies, learning and
skills councils, regional cultural consortia and youth services.
Speakers include Bob McKee, chief executive of the Library Association;
Alan Wells, director of the Basic Skills Agency; and Sue Wilkinson,
senior adviser at Resource.
