you're absolutely right, of course; what's puzzling me is the 'Romae' bit
more than anything... I find it difficult (but not absolutely impossible) to
imagine that it's supposed to be a pilgrimage to Rome; but if it's a
particular *kind* of local procession/penance (of the kind you rightly
remind me about), I haven't come across any other references to it. still a
bit stumped!
