Many thanks to all of you who have contributed, including one off-list
contribution saying that during WWII the Americans prepared
examples in the Pacific of a line map on one side and `remote
sensed image' on the other, and that more recently there have been
some Australian examples. The other answers indicate that this
(line-map plus photo/satellite image) does seem to be the usual
pattern of such two-in-one mapping: but the Belgian example cited by
Bob Parry would seem to approach most closely to what I had in
mind!
