Discover how to overcome reading reluctance amongst 9 to 14 year olds in
this new one day workshop:
Children and reading - avoiding the gap
9 May, LAHQ, London
'I don't read books, I watch television'.
'I don't like reading because just about every book I get out from the
library I don't like'.
This nine year-old girl and twelve year-old boy graphically highlight the
challenges librarians face in their efforts to promote reading to children.
For many, reading has become a turn-off by the time they are nine. Even
more lose interest in the early years of secondary school. Reading is not
just a pleasurable activity that is a shame to miss out on. Studies
demonstrate a strong link between lack of reading skills and social
exclusion. What are the factors that demotivate children and what is the
role of the public library in helping to overcome them?
How will this event help you?
This workshop provides an opportunity to find out more about reading
problems and reading reluctance among nine to fourteen year-olds and
explores appropriate resources and effective strategies for tackling the
issues in a public library context.
By the end of the day you will have:
* explored the impact of reading difficulties and reading reluctance
* discovered practical methods for promoting reading and enjoyment
* identified new strategies for exploiting books and other resources.
* gained extra confidence when helping children, their parents and
carers.
Who will benefit from attending?
Children's librarians and other interested public library staff.
