I don't know, but I was one of those who wielded a trowel and
excavasted those excavastions, which was great fun. As archaeologists
must, we started at the top and worked down towards the bottom. I was
actually excavasting 18th-century skeletons, which were of little
interest to us, but each one had to be carefully recorded and
photographed - after all, someone, somewhere is doing research on 18th
century burial practices, or perhaps is interested in what people were
dying of at that period. Probably boredom, in Whithorn, from what I
saw of it.
