Garry Wills, in his admirable introduction to Augustine (really just a
brief bio) refers to Jerome as "the grump of Bethlehem." For a more
detailed look at Jerome's irascible nature you may wish to take a look at
Carolinne White's _Christian Friendship in the Fourth Century_, ch. 8 or
which deals with Jerome's habit of making and losing amici.
