Hello everyone, glad you have joined.
Dear all, I am desparate to track down bone id manuals for
some of our marine mammal species. Particularly those
hanging around the UK. I fear they do not exist, the best
one I saw for whales was written in 1880 and is the size of
a small building. As for seals, any ideas?
I don know that a student (Lisa Hodges) at Durham has a
seal id manual within her phd, for northern species.
Another student in the states,(Vicky Szabo), has done some
metrical work on vertebra of whales for id purposes. Is
there anything else out there?
Obviously neither of these are widely available, if they
ever become so I shall let the list know.
I need the help as I have quite a lot of whale, and a few
seals in my collection from pre- and historic western isles
of scotland(the outer hebrides). Trying to manipulate the
epiphysis of blue whale humerus to id it is something of a
physical challange. Partic as you have to handle yours and
the reference one. Here in the uk it is difficult to get
to the large collections of whale material (the BM nat
hist) and the Nat Mus Scot, and you generally always need
help.
I would like to develop a whale manual, or series of
papers, in collab with others. I just want to know what
else is out there and if there is a need for one. I already
have publisher interest.
