Statistics for the Terrified, version 4.5
The new version of Statistics for the Terrified has now been released for
PC networks, and is compatible with NT, Windows 98 and 95. A more flexible
pricing system has been introduced, based on the annual number of users.
For information about the software itself (content, technical enquiries,
etc) or to obtain a demonstration copy, contact Stephen Morris or Jill

BACKGROUND INFO
Learning statistics is a perennial problem for students and research
workers from non-mathematical backgrounds. Most simply want to be able to
apply statistics in their chosen field. By approaching it as a tool to be
used rather than an academic discipline, a higher degree of understanding
and flexibility can be achieved. Much of this can be attained through
repeated, varied and directed observation, accomplished in this tutorial by
turning the learning of statistics into a game.
Statistics for the Terrified provides a thorough grounding in undergraduate
and research statistics for the non-mathematician, and can be used by
others who wish to acquire a good working knowledge of statistics. The
program is widely used in UK colleges and universities, and in commercial
organisations.
Statistics for the Terrified incorporates a series of computerised
challenges and games, which the user plays by changing the data. This is a
radical departure in statistics teaching, where data is typically sacred
and immutable. This interactive approach involves the student directly. By
displaying simple, interactive, graphical representations, the mechanics of
Statistics become clear and a genuine intuitive understanding is gained. In
addition there are animations, challenges and randomly generated
simulations illustrating concepts such as sampling, confidence intervals,
etc.
NEW IN THIS VERSION:
Improved graphics and navigation
History and search facilities
Improved glossary
Larger display (800 x 600)
Progress log
User guide
Content summaries to print
V4.5 is 32-bit software
SINGLE-USER VERSION
A single-user version of Statistics for the Terrified, v4.0, is also
available on CD at 29.95 pounds sterling. This has all the key features of
v4.5 and is ideal for home use and non-networked use within organisations.
AREAS COVERED INCLUDE
Simple data description: comparing the mean and median; range and variance;
the coefficient of variation; the normal curve; box and whisker plots.
Standard error and confidence intervals: sample means and population mean;
understanding standard error through sampling; estimating the se of the
mean from the population sd; confidence intervals are based on the se of
the sample mean; a 95% CI contains the population mean 95% of the time.
What does p<0.05 really mean?: sampling and the distribution of the
population mean; critical regions and type I errors; power and type II
errors.
How to choose a test: data layouts and pattern recognition; group
comparisons; repeated measurements, related measurements, classification
tables; appropriate tests.
Testing for differences between groups: two sample t-test; oneway analysis
of variance; twoway analysis of variance; Mann-Whitney test; Kruskal-Wallis
test.
Analysing repeated measures: before/after tests; paired t-test; Wilcoxon
signed rank test; area under a curve.
Analysing 2x2 classification tables: risk; relative risk; expected values;
the chi-square test; sample size; constraints (Fisher's exact test).
Fitting lines to data: gradient; intercept; correlation; outliers.
Uncovering hidden influences: illustration of hidden dangers in
interpretation; analysis of covariance; twoway analysis of variance;
matching groups to avoid bias.
PRICING
Up to 25 users - 299 pounds sterling.
Next 25 users - 10 pounds sterling per user
Next 250 - 7 pounds sterling per user
After 250 - 5 pounds sterling per user
Version 3 upgrade - Holders of site licences for v3.0 should deduct 199
pounds sterling from the total fee for the initial licence for v4.5.
This licence is renewable annually. Specific renewal dates can be arranged
on request. The number of users is defined as the total number of users
that run the programme during the licence period, or where this cannot be
measured the total number of machines that run (or can run, if this cannot
be measured) the programme during the licence period.
