YOUNG ARCHAEOLOGISTS' CLUB COORDINATOR
The Council for British Archaeology, an educational charity, wishes to
appoint a Coordinator to manage and develop its Young Archaeologists' Club
(aimed at young people aged 9-16).
The successful candidate will have previous involvement in managing a youth
organisation and working with young people within a framework of either
formal or informal education, and is expected to be educated to degree
level. No hard-and-fast set of qualifications is asked for. A good working
knowledge of British archaeology and experience of working with volunteers
will be an advantage.
This is a permanent post, based in York. Salary UKP 15,000-20,000 plus
pension benefit, based on experience.

The Council for British Archaeology (CBA)
Founded in 1944, the CBA is a registered charity and a company limited by
guarantee. Through our Council, eleven English regional branches, CBA Wales,
our partner the Council for Scottish Archaeology and a small permanent
staff, the CBA works to promote the study and safeguarding of Britain's
historic environment, to provide a forum for archaeological opinion, and to
improve public interest in, and knowledge of, Britain's past.
The Young Archaeologists' Club
The Young Archaeologists' Club was set up (as Young Rescue) in 1972 as a
club for 9-16 year olds who were interested in archaeology and wanted to
find out more about it. The Club was originally run to fill the gap in
schools and local archaeological societies, particularly by providing
opportunities for children to become involved in archaeology, especially in
non excavating field archaeology. This year the Club celebrates its 28th
birthday.
In August 1993, the Club was taken over by the Council for British
Archaeology and it now acts as the junior wing of the CBA and has over 3,000
individual members. It is run from the CBA's office in York, although the
Club currently has 55 regional branches around the UK, all run by
volunteers. Club branches provide an opportunity for young people to find
out more about their local archaeology, get involved in archaeological
projects and participate in archaeological activities.
The Club produces a quarterly magazine, Young Archaeologist, which contains
news from around the British Isles, regular reports from junior
correspondents, features on recent finds, book reviews, competitions, places
to visit and many things to make and do.
Regular events organised by the Club include annual YAC holidays (which this
year involved two six-day holidays to East Anglia, although previous venues
have included Cornwall, Snowdonia and Northumberland) and National
Archaeology Days (co-organised by the CBA & YAC and aimed at families, with
over 150 sites taking part in July 2000).
Each year the Club organises a prestigious award, the Young Archaeologist of
the Year Award, based on a competition, for young people interested in
archaeology. Each year the winners are judged in two age categories 9-12 &
13-16.
Other YAC membership services include the provision of T-shirts and
sweatshirts and other Club merchandise, and a scheme for discounted entry to
museums, heritage centres, etc.

The job
The main purpose of the post is to manage, develop and promote the Young
Archaeologists' Club.
The main duties and responsibilities are to:
1 implement the CBA's strategy for the Young Archaeologists' Club
2 develop, coordinate and support the network of YAC branches, in
conjunction with the Network Coordinators, branch representatives and YAC
Advisory Committee, to include:
i recruitment, screening and training of volunteer branch
leaders
ii coordination and monitoring of branch leaders' performance
3 act as the executive officer of the YAC's Advisory Committee and
service its needs in the production of information, agendas, papers and
minutes
4 organise regular YAC branch leaders' training events and other
events for branch leaders
5 developing the YAC holidays
6 oversee production of the quarterly Young Archaeologist magazine (in
conjunction with the Publications Officer)
7 oversee maintenance and development of the YAC membership database,
the servicing of YAC members, including provision of Wormwear merchandise,
the Young Archaeologist of the Year award, and the updating of the YAC web
site
8 liaise with, and inform, CBA Officers, staff (in particular the
Education Officer) and specialist committees on all matters relating to YAC
9 to assist with responding to information and education queries that
relate to informal education
10 be (or become) conversant with, and make use of, in-house computer
hardware and software
11 such other duties as may from time to time be requested by the
Deputy Director
The postholder acts as line manager for the full-time YAC Assistant
(currently Lorraine Bathurst) who undertakes the administration associated
with YAC membership, as well as editing the Young Archaeologist, updating
the YAC web pages, running the Young Archaeologist of the Year Award and
assisting with other aspects of the Club.
Qualifications and background
The successful candidate will have previous involvement in managing a youth
organisation and working with young people within a framework of either
formal or informal education, and is expected to be educated to degree
level. No hard-and-fast set of qualifications is asked for. A good working
knowledge of British archaeology and experience of working with volunteers
will be an advantage.
Personal qualities, computer literacy, an ability to write accurately and
clearly, and a friendly telephone manner will all be important. The
successful candidate will be able to work under pressure, have a sense of
humour, be good at communicating with people from all walks of life, and
work well within a small team with minimal supervision.
Salary and contract
Salary UKP 15,000-20,000 plus pension benefit, based on experience. The post
is permanent, following a three month probation period, and will be based in
York. Any job offer will be subject to independent checks.
Working conditions
The post is based with the CBA secretariat in Bowes Morrell House, 111
Walmgate, York. The normal working day is 9.00am - 5.00pm, though this may
be varied with the Deputy Director's agreement. This post carries a holiday
entitlement of 24 days, with additional days at Christmas, Easter and some
bank holidays.
