Hi,
NEMS is going to run a Museum Education Shadow Scheme (MESS) this autumn.
This allows any member of museum staff (particularly new education staff,
volunteers & front of house) to shadow an established education officer in
another museum. People will choose from 6 museums (Hancock, Alnwick Castle,
Darlington Railway, Bede's World, Kirkleatham Old Hall & Discovery) &
contact them directly to arrange to observe a school party getting taken
around for a morning. This will be followed up by a full day at Beamish on
8th Nov, again to observe staff , but also to exchange experiences, draw out
good practice & to hear from a local advisor on the Thinking Skills approach
& how children best learn in a museum.
I understand London's Transport Museum did something similar and gave staff
questionnaires to complete, not only to record the visit, but also to
encourage them to assess their own practice with visitors and school
parties. Could I have any info on your scheme & a copy of the questionnaire?
I have copied this to the GEM mailbase in case anyone else has any info on
similar schemes.
Speak soon.
