JOB DESCRIPTION
MUSEUM EDUCATION OFFICER
at The Jewish Museum, Camden Town
The Jewish Museum requires a full-time Education Officer to develop and
extend its programme of education and lifelong learning. The Education
Officer will have a key role in developing the Museum’s educational
services and the educational potential of its collections.
This is a fixed term contract for 2 to 3 years, funded by a grant from
the Museums and Galleries Commission Designation Challenge Fund. The
Museum’s collections have been awarded Designated status in recognition
of their outstanding national importance.
The Education Officer will be based primarily at the Camden Town
location of the Jewish Museum, but may also be required to work
occasionally at the Museum’s Finchley location or to undertake outreach
work off-site.
The Education Officer will work as part of the Museum team, and will be
responsible for the following:
1. Organising and leading imaginative educational programmes for primary
and secondary schools and for other educational organisations, such as
youth clubs, church and synagogue groups.
2. Developing links with schools, churches and other organisations,
within London and elsewhere in Britain, to encourage visits to the
Jewish Museum and to promote a greater awareness and understanding of
Jewish history and religious life, drawing on the Museum's collections.
3. Establishing links with education authorities and other agencies to
forge partnerships and promote the Museum’s educational services.
4. Creating new activities and resource materials to complement the
displays in the Museum galleries, and to enhance children's enjoyment
and the educational value of school visits. Particular priority will be
given to the development of "hands-on" activities for primary school
children and pupils with special needs, for example by creating
"discovery boxes" for use in educational programmes.
5. Developing the Museum's programme of informal education and family
education, to include holiday activities and creative workshops for
children and activities to link in both with the Museum’s programme of
special exhibitions and the cycle of Jewish festivals.
6. Extending and promoting the Museum's programme of adult education and
lifelong learning, encouraging group visits from a wide range of
organisations such as church groups and pensioners' groups, speaking to
adult groups (both at the Museum and off-site) and helping to organise
lectures and cultural events.
7. Developing strategies for social inclusion in relation to the
Museum's collections, forging links with new audiences and providing
programmes and resources for young people and adults with special needs.
8. Reporting on the progress of the work on a regular basis and
maintaining records of educational programmes and bookings, including
evaluation forms to be completed by organisations booking educational
programmes.
9. Assisting in the administration, work and development of the Museum,
and undertaking such other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
The Education Officer will be responsible to the Museum Director and to
the Council of the Jewish Museum. He/she will work under the leadership
of the Museum Curator at Camden Town, and the Senior Education Officer,
who is based at the Museum’s Finchley location.
