Doug Hirst asked about specification for urine stick testing. This is
contained in the excellent MDA report 98/65 and summarised in Professional
Nurse (August 1999, Vol 14 No 11 791 - 796) by Stephen Halloran's group.
The annual UK reagent strip bill is more than £4 million (probably double
this with labour and materials). If we follow the the advice in Joan Zilva
eloquent paper on qualitiative biochemical urine testing: the case for
selectivity(Ann Clin Biochem 1982: 19: 8-11), then it should be possible to
create a few extra laboratory posts, improve quality and save the NHS money.
