I would agree that another spectator position outside the enjoyment of the
fighting does exist.
I do however question the application of a 20th century sensibility to a
Roman citizen of Caligula's era.
I also wonder about mike's comment re 'the dude is dead'. Boxing is enjoyed
to this day and sometimes results in death to one of the participants. As
mentioned elsewhere, Tarantino is 'into evoking emotional responses'. Is
the response less valid, less real because it is evoked by a re-presentation
of violence. I don't think it's that easy, especially as these emotional
reactions happen almost instantaneously and seem to precede rationalization.
