Dear Mike,
Congratulations!!
David,
As per your question, I can attest that the DRS and the Ph.D. list helped me
in several ways as a student and since completing the Ph.D. I completed the
Ph.D. back in 2003, and was unaware of the DRS until 2002, when I first
attended the DRS conference in Brunel and found both the world of design
research and the Ph.D. list! Subsequent Ph.D. list dialogue and exchanges
helped substantially in framing some of the thinking in my dissertation and
thesis, which I had been working on since 1999. The support and advice given
by some very prominent professors, colleagues and researchers were cathartic
in that they gave perspective and substance to the novice design researcher
and the list became for me a great place to vet ideas and concepts.
As a novice researcher who had been 'staff' for some time, I have been on a
an ongoing journey from a 'practice only' researcher to hopefully one who
explores some of the deeper meanings of design in research. The list has
been a great forum for exploration, discussion and debate...
David, you comment about the students being less visible at times - perhaps
silence may come from fear of clarity in articulation, but I can only speak
for myself.I have also enjoyed being able to help those interested in the
subjects we speak about, both on and off-list...once I got past the above -
mentioned issue!

Mike,
Congratulations and a warm welcome to the club! Maybe you are the
list's very first successful completion, though I'm sure we would all
like to hear from other recent PhDs who have found the list helpful in
whatever way.
The original intention of this list was of course to provide a forum
for both students and staff, though the former seem less visible at
times.
