Lubomir,
You seem to be talking about Erving Goffman. He died in 1982, the year that his daughter Alice was born.
The book *On the Run* that I mentioned was written by Alice Goffman. Alice Goffman has, by the way, indicated that she has no interest in theory.
Does it make me a positivist to believe that it is a serious academic flaw to write a dissertation and a book that state things that are verifiably false as facts? Alice Goffman has done just that. Although I know of Erving Goffman, I haven’t read his work and can’t speak to whether it is counterfactual.

Goffman is a major sociologist of the 20th Century, a major contributor to the development of Symbolic Interactionism, and has brought important sociological theories by himself. In fact, he is one of the most revered sociologists today. Researchers using qualitative methods owe him a lot. It is a pity he died quite young--could have done much more in the study of everyday life.

And we should not nix Positivist contributions just because they do not fit into our understanding of science. Positivists are very good in the study of mass processes. We went to the extremes. This is human and it is not a problem as long as we are flexible and can see the social situations from several different perspectives. Not a single perspective is privileged, because these are human perspectives. And we are not privileged.
