medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (26. December) is the feast day of:
Stephen Protomartyr (d. c. 35) Stephen was one of the first seven deacons
chosen for the Christian community of Jerusalem, as described in the Acts
of the Apostles. After he was questioned by the Sanhedrin about his
beliefs, a lynch-mob stoned him to death.
Archelaus of Kashkar (d. c. 278) Archelaus was bishop of Kashkar
(Mesopotamia). He was a great opponent of Manichaeism (the anti-Manichaean
writings under his name aren't actually by him, though).
Zosimus (d. 418) Zosimus was a Greek who became pope in 417. He was a
strong asserter of papal authority in a series of abrasive clashes with
other churchmen.
Amaethlu (Maethlu) (6th cent.) Amaethlu was an early Welsh saint, about
whom little seems to be known except that he founded the church of
Llanfaethlu on Anglesey.
