medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
A common exegesis of this passage, in Sayer's edition for instance, is that
the punishment of these three represents the deepest sin\crime of the middle
ages: betrayal of sworn allegiance to one's lord: the betrayal of Christ,
the spiritual lord, and Caesar, the temporal lord. The scene is a typical
Dantesque combination of high drama and learned political theory.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Someone recently posed a question about the reverence
in which Julius Caesar was held by Dante. It just
occurred to me that those in the deepest recesses of
the Inferno are Judas, Brutus and Cassius. Dante must
have had a partucular loathing for those who betray
friends who have done them no harm. Sounds like a
thesis topic to me.
