medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear colleagues
C. H. Lawrence edited some of the texts written to provide evidence of Edmund of Abingdon’s saintliness from the canonization proceedings of 1244-6. These tend to stress the piety of Edmund’s life and behaviour rather than witnessing to miracles. Edmund’s canonization is an example of the formal process of canonization that became established (I think - am I right?) in the thirteenth century. Can anyone suggest an account of the development of the process of canonization in this period? I thought I’d look at Colin Morris’ book on the Papal Monarchy; any other ideas?
Many thanks
Cate
