medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
> My impression was always that clergy accompanied the condemned to provide last rites and that the clergy were also present at the auto-de-fe. Based on what you say about clergy being forbidden to attend these kind of events, are the impressions incorrect?
no. I cannot cite canon law for this, but pastoral care for the -
hopefully repentant - sinner going to die is the priest's duty, and he
must be present. Presence for any other (or no) reason can cast
suspicion on him that he might have something to do with the matter
itself, which falls under the ban.
