medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Confession, especially Easter duty, confession is crucial to the
mendicant v. secular debates, especially in the early 14th century. See,
among others:
Yves Congar, "Aspects ecclesiologiques de la querelle entre mendiants et
seculiers dans la seconde moitie dti xiii1' siecle et le debut du
xiv1'," Archives d'histoire doctrinale et lifteraire 38 (1961):
35-151
Jeffrey Garrett Sikes, "John de Pouilli and Peter de la Palu," English
Historical Review 49 (1934): 219-40
Herveus Natalis, De iurisdictione, ed. Ludwig Hodl (Munich, 1959).
John of Paris, De confessionibus audiendis*:* *quaestio disputata
Parisius de potestate papae , ed. Ludwig Hodl (Munich: Hueber, 1962).
Jean Dunbabin, ***A hound of God: *Pierre de la Palud and the
fourteenth-century church (*Oxford : Clarendon Press, 1991).
Decima L *Douie, *The conflict between the seculars and the mendicants
at the University of Paris in the thirteenth century (London:
Blackfriars, 1954).
In the first stage, ca. Thomas Aquinas, mendicant poverty was crucial.
Privileges become more important around the beginning of the 14th
century. They continue to be controversial well into the 15th.
