medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thanks for that good lead, Maureen. It did the trick. Browsing through the Acta Apostolicae Sedis, it appears that the Vatican used the Roman system of dating with some frequency in very formal or ceremonial documents even late into the nineteenth century (1880s). It still occasionally appears today, usually in acta dealing with the canonization of saints.
Best,
John

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture I am unable to answer directly but suggest that the transition might be traced by reading the ends (datings) of documents published in Acta Apostolicae Sedis , availbale in many academic and R.C. diocesan libraries.

Does anyone know when the Vatican stopped routinely dating offical documents according to the Roman civil calendar (Kalends, Nones, Ides)? I've seen a 1954 commenmorative medal for Pius X's canonization dated "IV Kal. IUN" but the 20th-century encyclicals, etc.that I've browsed all use modern dating.
Thanks,
John
