medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (24. November) is the feast day of:
Chrysogonus of Aquileia (d. c. 304) C. was a Roman official, arrested in
Diocletian's persecution. He was beheaded, and his corpse thrown into the
sea (a priest then salvaged it). Sylvester I built a church over his tomb
in the first half of the fourth century---much rebuilt since, I gather. In
the twentieth century excavations in San Crisogono (Rome) found C's tomb 20
feet below the current level of the church.
Minver (6th cent.?) Minver was a virgin saint of South Wales, who lived as
a nun in Cornwall. The devil once tempted her while she was combing her
hair beside a well, but she drove him off by throwing her comb at him.
Colman of Cloyne (d. c. 606) Colman was born in Munster and became a poet
and royal bard at Cashel. At about the age of 50 he converted to
Christianity. He went on to become a priest and bishop, active in Limerick
and Cork.
Enfleda (d. c. 704) Enfleda was the daughter of King Edwin of Northumbria
and Ethelburga; she was raised in Kent after her father's death. In 642
she married Oswiu of Bernicia, and brought loyalty to Roman practices north
with her, thus acting as a catalyst for the synod of Whitby. After Oswiu's
death, E. became the abbess of Whitby, ruling it with her daughter Elfleda.
Flora and Mary (d. 856) Flora was a native of Cordoba, the daughter of a
Muslim father and a Christian mother. Her mother secretly raised Flora as
a Christian. When her brother discovered her apostasy from Islam, he had
her flogged and imprisoned. But she escaped, and met Mary---the sister of
a deacon who had been martyred. The two decided to give themselves up to
the town magistrate as Christians. They were threatened with sale to a
brothel in an attempt to force them to return to Islam, but when they
remained firm were beheaded at order of Abd-ar-Rahman II.
