medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and
culture
From: [log in to unmask]
You might also consult Walter Map's De Nugix Curialium.... he has, I
recall, some particularly sharp words about the Cistercians
an admirable bit of Understatement.
he accuses them of everything short of going to War in Iraq on a Lie.
their moving of boundry stones on their property was, i thought, a
particularly damming bit of slander, considering his audience.
somewhere i came across an article concerning his antipathy towards
these third generation Cistercians of his own day, but i can't recall
where that was.
it is interesting that it is more or less around Map's time --or,
perhaps, just a bit before-- that there is a marked change in Cistercian
architecture (at least in Northern France), the old, austere forms of
the early generation(s) giving way to the most Up-to-Date "Gothic"
ones.
