medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The distinction between schismatics and heretics is clear in the
Roman Catholic Code of Canon Law (1983), c. 751: " Heresy is the obstinate
denial or doubt, after baptism, of a truth which must be believed by divine
and catholic faith. Apostasy is the total repudiation of the christian
faith. Schism is the withdrawal of submission to the Supreme Pontiff or
from communion with the members of the Church subject to him. " See
<http://www.intratext.com/X/ENG0017.htm> for other references, The Canons
of the Church of England,
<http://www.cofe.anglican.org/about/churchlawlegis/canons/>, contain no
equivalent. In practice and especially historically, the distinction is
muddy. Many groups which begin as schismatic, e.g., Donatists in North
Africa, later become known as heretics. Part of the process of moving from
schism to heresy is the mutual vilification and the clinging not to the
central and common aspects Christianity but to the ideas that distinguish
the two groups.
Even between Christian groups, one might consider the other
schismatic while the other considers the first heretical. Cf. positions of
Romans and Orthodox on each other.
