They mostly stood. Or knelt at the Consecration. The stalls being for the
monks, nuns, canons, etc. Even for sermons one sees in illuminations some
people standing, some sitting on the ground, etc. University lecture halls
had benches and a cathedra. A splendid example of same is at Salamanca.
