medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (13. September) is the feast day of:
John Chrysostom (d. 407) John "golden-mouth" (as his nickname means) was a
native of Antioch in Syria. He became a hermit in his youth but ruined his
digestion with too much asceticism and took to urban priesthood instead.
John won fame for his sermons, and in 398 he was made patriarch of
Constantinople. But he made enemies at the imperial court, who arranged
his deposition and exile. He was the most prolific of the eastern doctors
of the church.
Eulogius of Alexandria (d. 607) Eulogius was a monk and abbot at Antioch
(Syria), and in 580 became Melkite patriarch of Alexandria. I confess that
I included him today in the hope that somebody could explain the reference
to a "Melkite" patriarch. Eulogius was a friend of Gregory the Great.
Amatus of Sion (d. 690) Amatus was abbot of Agaune, and then bishop of
Sion (in Switzerland). He was falsely accused of something and banished;
he spent the rest of his life as a monk, first at Peronne and then at
Breuil.
Martin of Camaldoli (d. 1259) (blessed) Martin became abbot of Camaldoli
in 1248, which gave him the generalship of the Camaldolese congregation.
He wrote a new constitution for them.
Francesco Piani of Calderola (blessed) (d. 1407) Francesco was a
Franciscan, a successful preacher with a special gift for reconciling
enemies.
