medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
John the Baptist's bones were said to have been exhumed from his tomb at Sebaste at the instigation of the emperor Julian, burned, and then scattered. (The earliest authority for this appears to be Rufinus in his Ecclesiastical History, writing thirty to forty years after the reported event but perhaps with the benefit of having spent nineteen of those years working in Jerusalem in very well connected circles.)
Yes, Happy New Year to everyone!

Maybe such things are well-known, but,
is this a thread running through saints' lives;
of having their remains dug up and subjected to "torture," as it were?
Were saints (or others), for example, dug up and hung or quartered, etc?
Did this happen to commonfolk, as well?
Oh, and Happy New Year.
Thanks,
