medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
John, Is it not possible to establish a compromise, reading the
classical martyrologies on 9th July:
Usuard: A. VII IDUS JULII. (9 Juli)
'Romae ad Guttam jugiter manantem, natalis sancti Zenonis martyris *et aliorum decem millium* ducentorum trium.'
There are no 'decem millium' on any other day in Usuardus, so it looks
more like a 11th-12th century topic to me.
July 11th is by the way the Translation (or 'Deposition') of the venerable
Benedictus, his NATALE has always been on March 23, as we of course all know;-)

>Er, I'm away from my books just now, but the legend in some form must be earlier than the twelfth century. I encountered a version of it recently whilst working on a paper dealing with Latin prosimetric texts from central and southern Italy of the ninth through eleventh centuries.
