medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Chris
As 'W' is one of the letters in the Latin alphabet which was not used in the
writing of Irish it might have been difficult for him to find anyone fitting
those particular alphabetical criteria. Names beginning with 'W' are usually
either abbreviated (thus William become Liam) or avoided!
For an important account of Willibrord's time in Ireland and of Irish
influences on his subsequent mission see Dáibhí Ó Cróinín, 'Rath Melsigi,
Willibrord, and the earliest Echternach manuscripts' in Peritia 3 (1984)
17-49. Pages 43-49 of this article are an appendix by Thomas Fanning
suggesting that the Rath Melsigi where Willibrord received his training can
be identified with the early Christian site of of Clonmelsh in Co Carlow.
