medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. April) is the feast day of:
Isidore of Seville (d. 636) Isidore was born to an upper-class
Romano-Spanish family. He succeeded his brother Leander as bishop of
Sevill in c. 600. He was a good bishop and a very major writer,
encouraging a scholarly revival in Visigothic Spain and personally
pulling together a great deal of classical knowledge for use by later
generations, most notably in the *Etymologiae*.
Plato (d. 814) Plato was raised in Constantinople. He was an
imperial treasurer, but gave it up to become a monk on Mt. Olympus
(Bithynia). In 770 P. became abbot, eventually moving on to a
hermitage. He was exiled twice because of his annoying habit of
criticizing the emperor's morals.
Peter of Poitiers (d. 1115) Peter became bishop of Poitiers in 1087,
after serving as archdeacon. He's another one of those obnoxious
clerics who liked to denounce immorality in high places, in his case
Philip I of France
