medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (24. June) is the feast day of:
John the Baptist. Unlike almost all saints' days, this is the anniversary
of John the Baptist's birth, rather than death. According to German
folklore, rain on this day will lead to a poor harvest.
Ivan of Bohemia (d. 904) According to tradition, Ivan was a Bohemian
prince who refused the crown, instead living 14 years in a cave near
Prague.
William of Vercelli (d. 1142) Born in Vercelli in 1085, in 1114 William
withdrew to Monte Vergiio and founded a shrine consecrated to the Virgin
Mary, giving the mountain the new name "Monte Vergine." He attracted
followers, and founded the Benedictine Congregation of Monte Vergine,
founding numerous monasteries, including some for women.
Blessed Antonio Turriani (d. 1484) A Milanese physician, Antonio always
commenced his treatments by having his patients confess their sins. To
exercise his profession better, he became an Augustinian, and devoted
himself to treating the poor.
