According to the _Bibliotheca Sanctorum_, t here have been at least
three saints or supposed saints with this name:
1. The Privatus of Dionysius and Privatus of Usuard's Martyrology.
This P. is said to have been based on a misunderstanding of a toponym
in the pesudo-Hieronyman Martyrology ('Privatum' = 'Brivatum', etc.,
i.e. of today's Brioude in Haute-Loire).
2. Privatus, bp. of Mende, attested to in Gregory of Tours, _Historia
Francorum_ 10. 29. He has two _Passiones_: a brief one (BHL 6933)
included by Vincent of Beauvfais in his _Speculum Historiale_ and a
longer one (BHL 6932) said to go back to the tenth century. Guillaume
Durand the liturgist was also bp. of Mende and his tomb at Santa Maria
sopra Minerva in Rome is adorned with a mosaic featuring this saint.
See Gerard Mathon, s.v. "Privato (lat. _Privatus_; fr. _Privat_),
vescovo di Mende, santo, martire," in _Bibliotheca Sanctorum_, vol. 10
[1968], cols. 1126-27.
3. Although no. 2 above is surely the saint in question, there is/was
also a Privatus of Rome, martyr, included by Baronio in the Roman
Martyrology on the dubious basis of his appearance in the Passio of
Pope St. Calixtus (Calixtus I).

John Dillon
