dear james brundage and everyone
thankyou for your comments on scandalum. Do you ever get the feeling
that, as we try to unpick the intricacies of canon law, we are not so
much acting as historians as retreading the paths of training for
medieval lawyers ...?

indeed ... fortunately for me, she says very little about public
penances for heresy [fortunately, because this is part of my area; and
if she had addressed it, she would undoubtedly have done it much better
than i], and i would loved to have been able to discuss this with her.
A great loss.
