To all - I am ceratinly anything but a new member, and tend to babble on
a bit so all will likely have seen my name, but all these introducitons
are so intriguing I thought I should finally send mine in as well.
I am a 2nd year PhD student at McGill University, where there is no
medieval studies program but a raft of marvelous medievalists - I am
their experiment in multidisciplinary studies. I am based in the English
Dept., but take courses (and have supervisors) in history, art history
and religion as well. My dissertation focuses on the legend(s) and cult
of Katherine of Alexandria from its origins ca. 10th century to the
Reformation. I am particularly interested in her popularity among women,
and their roles in writing, commissioning, collecting her legends and in
endowing her image, etc. I will also admit to a theoretical fetish -
like Guy - mine being psychoanalytic theory. As those of you who know
McGill will imagine I am working closely with Nancy Partner, who works
with psychoanalysis as one of a number of methodologies. So I aim to
combine "traditional" medieval scholarship (codicology, iconography,
textual analysis) with more theoretical models as well. My MA research
was on the Old English Exeter book, and (just to be odd) my "minor"
field is in dance history. I thought I shoul get some academic credit
for my arthritic knees.
I welcome any and all Katherine trivia, especially wierd art historical
representations.
Regards to all, Terry
