medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
>From: Steven Fanning <[log in to unmask]>
>To finish the point on the myth of riots around the English calendar change
>in 1751/52, an excellent article on the general topic and in particular on
>the origin of this myth is by Paul Alkon, "Changing the Calendar," in
>Eighteenth Century Life, vol. 7, n.s. 2 (January 1982), pp. 1-18.
Question: does the article cover anything besides English evidence? Though
the change was decreed in England, it affected many places besides:
Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the North American colonies. And as I posted, the
change was not received with universal enthusiasm or compliance, whether or
not there were riots. There's such a thing as nonviolent civil disobedience.
