because of Alphonse's Capetian residence and interests, and partly because of
a grave conflict between the local inquisitors and the papacy over Pamiers, I
believe, they were all appointed from northern France. This history is to be
seen in Yves Dossat's Les crises of the inquisition. A somewhat muddy book,
but full of information.
thanks, John.
i know nothing of the "crusade," but always suspected that it was as full of
the sort of "political" machinations which you mention here and that there was
a *lot* of "networking" going on; the imposed shift to inquisitors exclusively
from "northern France" must have opened up plenty of opportunities for the
Good Ole Boys up there.
Bishop Raginald ("of Mouçon") of Chartres, who i *believe* was the Chartres
bishop active in the South, died in 1217, perhaps too early to be teamed up
with Godfrey of Ablis (whose name, btw, doesn't sound familiar among the
_namengut_ i'm aware of for the "of Ablis" family).
i know nothing about possible Southern excursions on the part of Raginald's
sucessors, Walter (1217-34), Hugo "de la Ferté" (1234-36
--whose family was, i assume, the same as that which dominated the office of
Vidame from the earlier 12th c.), and "Aubry Cornut (1236-44), but perhaps
some of those names ring a bell with you or someone else. (a more or less
reliable list of the bishops of Chartres to be found here:
http://www.ariadne.org/centrechartraine/bishops/bishops.html ).
thanks again,
christopher
