medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I can't add much to Maureen Tilley's comments about journals and how committees decide what's "prestigious" or not. I will add that journals published by regional presses (South Central Modern Language Assn vs. PMLA) are generally not regarded quite as highly as national ones.
But universities in the US are changing fundamentally and have been for a long time. My husband and I retired mostly because we couldn't stand academic politics any longer. It usd to be that u's were run by educators who would eventually return to the classroom. Now they are managed by educrats, most often, but not always, with degrees in education rather than in a more traditional field. They count beans, shuffle papers, make sure they're being politically correct, and get rid of as many tenure-track profs as possible in order to replace them with adjuncts who are paid less and get no or reduced benefits. The latest scandal to hit US u's is the great textbook rip-off. Publishers change a page or two and, behold, a new edition making used versions of the book unusable - unless the prof does as I did: not use the damn thing. I used to get (free, of course) an annotated book, sample tests, answers to the test questions (!!), a CD with God knows what on it. The student book looked like a video game.
But I digress WIDELY from matters religious or medieval for which I beg pardon. It's just that this is a hot button for me and I couldn't hold my tongue (or fingers) any longer.
